How Reiki Helped my Parrots

In 2021 I decided to welcome parrots into my home for the first time. I had had a deep connection with birds throughout my life, they are my autistic Special Interest, however the pandemic changed a lot of things for most people, and I had found real emotional support from the time I spent with wild birds. I had researched pet birds for a long time but the pandemic was what made me take the leap.
I had grown up with what my mother affectionately called 'the menagerie'. Cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats & hamsters, with the occasional visit from our neighbours dogs and tortoises. My mum had grown up in a similar environment and rightly believed fostering a personal connection to nature is an extremely positive influence on a young child's life.
Birds were new to me though, and they presented new challenges. They're prey animals in the wild so they are naturally highly vigilant which can overspill into proper anxiety. My two Australian Parakeets were confident and boisterous, but my Indian Ringneck, Mr FM, was a very nervous little boy and really struggled with his confidence and security from the start.

From the beginning he struggled with change, panicking if I bought anything new into the home and hiding at the back of his enclosure when we had guests. It may sound silly but as an autistic woman I really empathised and felt for him, change is unsettling and new people can be intimidating to us too, and I made it my mission to help this little parrot grow his confidence and security.

Alongside invaluable advice from the online parrot community I had the idea that energy work could be beneficial. Parrots not only can see in the UV spectrum but they are highly sensitive to energy and are even suggested to be able to see energy on the electromagnetic spectrum.
I had noticed Mr FM was highly sensitive to my own moods but also responded positively after I had done rituals and energy work in our home. From this I decided to start offering Reiki to him.
His reaction to our first session was quite remarkable. When we look in our 'astral' eye during a reiki session the reiki source energy usually enters the practitioner through their head, I personally see it as a stream of bright white light entering through my crown. When doing 'hands off' treatments we 'beam' the energy to our recipient and it enters by infusing through their aura.

As I began channelling Mr FM became very calm and, eerily, started gazing directly above my head with interest, exactly where I feel the reiki energy enter my body. As our session went on he adopted typical bird relaxation body language, gently fluffed up, slow blinking eyes and one of his little feet tucked up. This was such a stark difference to his usual sleek hyper vigilant body language, it was genuinely moving to see. He occasionally gazed around his own head an body in wonder as though he could see the energy illuminating his own aura and was mesmerised by it.
After our session I took him back to his 'nest' and he proceeded to take a nap which, in the middle of the day, which was absolutely unheard of and spoke to his level of relaxation and security.

If I had needed confirmation of my own abilities and that of reiki this was it and I was determined to help other people and their animals with this wonderful healing modality.

Mr FM has been such a success story of reiki and energy work and I'm so passionate to share his story as I spend a good deal of time helping others on online pet forums with training and lifestyle adjustments for nervous animals or animals with previous trauma, I'm aware how many people need the support and want to help their beloved animals.

It's my personal opinion one of humanities 'purposes' on earth is to be guardians and protectors of the planets animals and wildlife and I know a lot of people share this opinion and I'm will do my best to help them achieve this with small, consistent acts of love and care.
